At the inaugral meeting of the Course Information Subgroup of the CETIS Enterprise SIG attendees confirmed that an XML standard and supporting tools for expressing course information were much needed in the UK HE and FE sector. Interesting work in the area of transforming curriculum content from Word documents to XML was identified along with complexities that arose from:
- The need to encompass quality assurance, reporting, marketing and enrolment needs
- Versioning of curriculum content and inter-relations between curriculum components
- Integration requirements for student progress files
- Variety in customs and practice across institutions
Discussion was aided by a prototype schema proposed by Scott Wilson, that demonstrated how curriculum content from London and Manchester Metropolitan Universities could be modelled.
After an excellent lunch at the Pan Asia Oriental Restaurant, the group decided that the project could be best progressed through a bid to JISC's ELF Reference Model call, which Mark Stubbs of Manchester Metropolitan University offered to lead.
