Attendees at the second meeting of the Course Information Subgroup of the CETIS Enterprise SIG heard that the JISC bid had been successful and that a budget of sterling37K had been secured to fund a 12 month project to establish a UK course information XML and supporting services. The project will be known as XCRI (eXchanging Course-Related Information) and will be led by Mark Stubbs on a 0.4 secondment (2 days a week) who will coordinate the contributions and efforts of members.
Dagfinn Bergsager of the University of Oslo provided a brief description of a similar national initiative in Norway, which had resulted in an XML schema. Members were impressed by this initiative and agreed to review the specification to consider the extent to which it met UK requirements.
The project manager identified group communication as a critical success factor and a set of criteria was identified that supporting communication infrastructure must provide:
- Membership list
- Document store
- List of useful URLs
- Events calendar
- Blogging
- Voting (when specifications were ready for review)
Mark Stubbs informed the group that he was required to submit detailed project plans to JISC's programme manager describing deliverables and resource commitments from partner institutions. After securing agreement on a three phase overall strategy of informed / compromise / in action (see the explanatory powerpoint slides), Mark informed members that he would be contacting them about deliverables and commitments shortly.
